Make the sample visible
Place a top card and a few candidate cards where everyone can see them. Say the question aloud: which candidate matches under the chosen basic rules? Do not begin with a speed challenge.
Ask for the reason
A learner should name the relevant condition rather than only point to a card. Use the practice checker to compare their explanation with the labelled result. If the answer is uncertain, return to the same complete source.
Change one thing
Keep the top card fixed while changing a candidate. Then try a wild eight and make the declared suit visible. Controlled changes help a new player connect the result to the state rather than memorising a picture.
End with a useful question
Ask the learner what information they would need before judging a different example. This is an original teaching exercise, not an extra rule for a regular game.
